@Dave
Google can, in fact, crawl flash now. However, with flash you use HTML hierarchies that search engines leverage to rank sites. With Flash you aren't going to have any importance denoted by H tags and P tags. So, a site can be crawled by Google, but the same site done in HTML with real SEO will out rank it every day.

Thank You all for your comments, i will continue to write informative articles corresponding to your needs. To those who disagree with this post, you're most definitely entitled to your opinion, however you have to understand that not every web developer/programmer/or designer uses the same set of rules to build a site or drive traffic to it. Therefore tutorials on tutorialblog.org are mostly opinions and alternatives that one can use to substitute their current methods. Thank you! I appreciate the comments!

Great set of tips. That's some good solid info to get people off on the right track. Just a couple of comments:

(1) As for the issue of Javascript, regardless of whether or not it's SE friendly now, many simple JS effects can be done using CSS. So why not err on the side of caution for our clients and use good ol' anchor text?

(2) Same goes for flash. Just because they say they can interpret flash doesn't mean flash sites are all of a sudden a good idea or will rank as well as traditional sites (all things being equal).

Good post.

pascalv: use google webmaster tools to set your preference, the issue of domain.com/, domain.com/index.htm is another matter and can only be resolved by your being consistent, i suggest using the full path (not domain.com/) as suggested here, as should someone copy/paste your url it will typically contain the full path so it pays to help in your consistency.

and THANK THE MAKER that you have rattled on about META TAGS i spend most of my free time correcting blog posts about that pish!

> "2) Avoid Javascript."

Sorry but this is blatantly wrong and bad advice. You should avoid obtrusive javascript that interferes with the semantic/presentation layers of a site (HTML/CSS) but simply avoiding javascript is dated advice.

You should be recommending people use "unobtrusive javascript" to enhance their site, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtrusive_JavaScript

great summary!
while I knew most, canonicalization was new – sort of: I came across the problem and still don't know how to resolve it.
could you clarify what to do to fix the domain name preference?
cheers
