I would love to see some analysis of the design for each one of the 30 greatest designs. That’s a very bold statement.
Don’t be mistaken, Web and Graphic design IS NOT about eye candy. That’s ridiculous. It’s about communicating effectively with your viewers and visitors.
You can not become a good designer by osmosis alone.
Start with the fundimentals: I suggest Primer of Visual Literacy by Donis A. Dondis . The book throws in Color Theory, too.
Obviously “great” is a subjective term in this context, and while the sites shown up there are all nice enough looking, and a couple very nice looking, I don’t see the design of any of them being anything more than what you could pick up from a html template site. There is not a single design in this list that is even touching on “innovative” or “unique” and that, unfortunately, is the problem.
We’ve all seen lists like this before and this adds nothing but to bulk out the already vast pages listing “the best of..” that litter the blogosphere.
I would rename this page to “30 extremely average designs” and point people to your other entry about “dirty designs” – http://tutorialblog.org/30-dirty-designs/ – some of which at least look like they have not come from a standardised template.
I like the Trillian website best. In my opinion it is the cleanest of those designs.
I can’t believe you listed trillian astra. The site looks like crap on my widescreen 14 inch display.

Great sites, I wish I could design sites as good as these. I agree with Ric saying that these sites could well be mistaken for template you can buy from template monster, but I always go to HTML template sites for inspiration. They are still very nice looking sites, and I’m looking forward to the new version of Trillian.
Some interesting suggestions. Can’t say I agree with the Eurovision Song Contest, far too busy a design. That and the fact that the competition is complete crap!

Only a few of them are worth seeing, most are quite usual css websites.
Nick has a very good point. The ColdFusion logo is as close to a complete copy as it gets. CarFreaks should definitely think about changing it so they don’t get sued.

I am so bored with the net. It’s either self indulgent wankery or banal lists. Great design is dead. It’s like fashion – it keeps eating itself and spewing out derivative rubbish and calling it cutting edge.

What’s so standards-compliant about these sites? CritBuns (the third one down, no less) is completely un-usable without images because of the lack of ALT text on the images.
Pretty pictures, sure. But be careful what you emulate.
