In our studio, we use a lot of layer styles effects : 'gradient overlay' (with blue gradient on the first type, and orange gradient on the second type) and 'outerglow'. Using layer styles gives you far more control/possibilities to easily change things if needed. I highly recommend that more flexible approach instead of this one. Good luck with the tutorial site!.
