A small custom built die might only cost you between $40-$80 from a reasonable die cutter. Even with your printer marking that up and the extra bindery time, a set of 1000 4-color custom die cut business cards will only run you about $400. If you have the budget for it, a die cut business card can be an extremely nice touch and the “little something” that sets yours apart.

Check out a bunch of inspirational business cards below that take advantage of die cuts. Most of these were taken from two great posts at Creative Bits as well as the incredible Daily Poetics Flickr set.

Also remember that die lines are not the only way to alter the shape of your card. Most printers have binderies that can do many other things like straight cuts, hole punches, and even rounded corners. These things are even cheaper that custom dies, so they are good to keep in mind when designing as well.

  1. I was looking into getting 4×4 rubik’s cubes custom printed, since my business has “cube” in the title. It’s even better than a business card, because it attaches to someone’s keychain. Google “custom rubik’s cubes” to take a look.

  2. I have a custom die for my business cards, I tried to offset the cost by just printing one color. Taking the cost of 3 inks out will cut that price in half. All of the single color cards in the post don’t suffer from having just once color!

    Great Post!

  3. Using a pre-made die (a die created for someone) may reduce costs as well. We had to have paper cut in the shape of a number one, and the print house had one from a previous job that we were able to use and not pay to have one custom made.

This scenario won’t apply to many cards or print houses, but it never hurts to ask.

  8. I was just about to have my business cards printed. Now I feel like I should be going with a die-cut solution. Thanks for eye-opener! Plain is boring.
