This is our second tutorial on the subject of making glossy text, this is another simple technique you can use for website headers or logos with just a few layer effects.

View our other gloss text tutorial.

To start off, make a gradient background and add your text to it in the typeface of your choice – for this tutorial we have used Franklyn Gothic Heavy :

Once your text is created, right click the text layer in the layer window and select ‘blending options’ and apply the following effects :

Next up, select the pen tool and draw zig-zag accross the text like so :

Make the lines join up and then right click and choose ‘make selection’ from the box that appears :

Fill the selection with a white to blue gradient, then hold down ctrl + click on the text layer in the layer window and you will have :

Then choose select > inverse from the menu and press delete and you will be left with this:

Now just take the opacity down on the highlight layer to this setting:

That is the final step, you should now have some nice glossy text :

    Hi,
On the step where I make a selection with the pen tool and then try to do a gradient fill, I get the following message:
“Could not use the gradient tool because the content of the layer is not directly editable.”

Any thoughts what I’m doing wrong? Thanks.
