It was only a few months back when I was excited to see that Web Designer Wall had released one of their excellently produced design compilations, Grid and Column Designs. After a quick examination of the whole article I was quite impressed at how many of the popular designs were brought together in a few simple categories and how those designs had managed to elegantly use simplicity and some organization to show their content. It was about a minute after my first glance that I realized that some extremely well constructed editorial sites that could easily be as good as or even better than the current selection; Australian News Websites.
My judgment of these websites may be slightly biased towards these websites because of my constant interaction with them, but as you will see they bring some serious competition and insight into the website design world.
News.com.au
Whilst holding a front page that is continually updating faster than any other Australian websites (jump there now…. the layout has probably changed again…) News.com.au shows how well simplicity can combine with both flash and a stunning header to make a simply inspirational website. As well as creating content specific pages in this website you will notice day by day that any content will flow from the top stories down into multiple subcategories at the bottom of the page.
NineMSN.com.au
NineMSN.com.au is one of those extremely dynamic websites. In it’s normal state it looks pretty fancy enough, but come some extreme news release of sort it transforms the top half of the page to accommodate a single or multiple updates whilst keeping the same form. Combined with slick style and a good assortment of ajax (click on the menu) this website packs a punch.
National Nine News
The National Nine New’s website gives off a very spacious grid based design with all the usual news necessaries as well as their new unique idea “The Flock”
ABC Rural News
The most notable item about this grid based design is that how direct to the readers it is. By having a header image that rural users can relate to, a grungy/earthy background and news that is just given to users without any searching it allows those who both want their information when they need it and those who may not be competent with the internet.
