You points are valid and ones that I did not consider. It's ironic because I have a lot of experience writing about computer privacy and security. My problem is that I don't read EULAs, whihc make no sense to me, most of the time. Thanks for the heads up.

I would be NEVER recommend using Vlingo. Their privacy is VERY lax in their favor. If you read the EULA, they reserve the right to retain your entire contact list (it downloads it anyway so it can dial and search contacts for you), and they also reserve all rights on how they use that data. Any data you send them is also their property, so they can sell it if they wish.

Also, what on earth could be Vlingo's motive to give this service away for free other than data mining? Google is a total package deal, and has good reason to give you services like this. The more you use Google in any format, the higher Google's value of search, the better they can sell advertising. Vlingo doesn't have such a thing. They are in this for less scrupulous reasons.

In other words, stay away from Vlingo until they promise your complete privacy.
