In this tutorial you are going to learn how to make a simple, modern logo that you can use in your future projects. The logo itself is very simple to make but after the basic shape is created you can easily add your own unique quirks (gradients, drop shadows etc) to make the logo truly your own.
Step 1.
OK, first we are going to start with the easiest part of all. Use the text tool and create some simple text for your logo. In this example we are going to use the text “tutorialblog.org” but obviously you will be using the text for your chosen project.

Tip: Make sure throughout this entire tutorial you don’t rasterize the layer that the text is on. This is so that if you ever want to use the same logo for another project or want to change the text slightly you will be able to without any hassle.
Step 2.
Select the elliptical marquee tool and create an oval shape over your newly created text. Make a new layer and fill in this new selection. You have now created the base shape for your logo.

Step 3.
Grab the selection that you have just made and move the marquee tool down slightly like interacted below. Then, hit delete.

Now is the time you can start tweaking the logo that you have. Try different colors, experiment with drop shadows and gradients. You can also play around with different base shapes and create some truly unique styles.

Nice tutorial Jon, the best side of the logo is that it can be used for anything.
The sad thing is, wannabe-interweb designers will come here, use that “tutorial”, and actually think they’re creating great logos… *sigh*
Ha. If it were so easy!
Funny, I bet the comments above are from Americans who just don’t get ‘irony’
No, they are from Europeans that do.
I saw mention above of “wannabe-interweb designers”…
Every expert was once a wannabe.
According to my belief this tutorial is a nice starting point for any beginner, however everybody knows that it takes some real skills and education to create good, solid designwork (including logo’s).
Reading some comments it seems that it is easier for people to nag at others than to come up with better ideas. Which makes me think the naggers are lacking the skills themselves.
And yes, there are too many swooshes, but if you have had some sort of design education, you’d probably know that (logo) design always starts with simple shapes and doodles in order to achieve complex and thought over results that may succeed in the overcrowded businessworld and stand out among the amateur designers and their useless comments.
These tutorials are very basic. There is nothing wrong with basic tutorials. I find that often times the internet is riddled with too many professional tutorials and not enough basic tutorials. However with that being said, the description for this site is for beginners and intermediates alike. There is nothing intermediate about this site. The tutorial are for beginners plain and simple. Great beginners tutorial site, but lets lose the falsifying descriptions.
Ignore those trolls and keep writing tutorials like these! Very helpful for those wanting to increase their ps skills (like me).
This is not how to create a logo. This is HOW to make it in Photoshop. A logo is very different than just doing a tutorial :S

Apparently some people have nothing better to do with their time than to criticize the author of this website’s work. Get a life people, honestly.
That said, I really enjoy your site’s layout, clean, no fuss and easy to navigate, excellent job on that!
As far as the tutorials, they serve as pleasant reminders to me and I’m sure are well appreciated for the beginners and anyone who is wanting to get their feet wet with Photoshop and graphics. There is an audience for all types of purposes and this one serves us beautifully.
Thank you, your work is appreciated. For those who have nothing of value to offer, might I suggest you demonstrate what positive value you’ve added to anyone’s “wannabe existence” today? Then again, we can look at the source of such nonsense. Not much there to respect.
I appreciate your work. As a complete beginner this site has been a daily stop. Thank you.
I love the Tuts, especially as a beginer. People are just running their mouths because they probably know a lil bit about design and are scare that us n00bs are going to learn and out do them, it is you basic L33t complex! Keep up the goo work!
Well at least the newbies will know that swooshes are verboten. Now about oval logos…
Thank you very much for all of your tutorials. Please keep doing what your doing, and ignore the critics.
These pimple-faced wastes of oxygen have forgotten that they at one time had to learn the basics. They offer nothing constructive, so are to be completely ignored.
To the Retards: if you’ve nothing more to offer here than half-assed comments, rather than solid tutorials that would contribute to real learning, than go back to pulling your puds while you work on your game sigs. Probably more than half you clowns don’t even work in graphic/ web design professionally, so your comments are automatically null and void.
So… what happen with the merchandising study of the company?, there are many things to think before to do a logo… that figure, should interprets like something good to company had; like for example stability, or concepts like that; is many time of company study for to do a logo, but its ok
then the graphic designers have less competition with the amateurs.
this is a great modern logo – for the 90s! oh and its been used 100s of times.
Its easy but wonderful. thanks
Hey I used this for my publication graphic design class test. The test covered the basics just like this tuturial. How can you say this is overly basic when he clearly states “experiment” with the shadows, etc. Hey we all have basically learned this program by experimenting, how can you dog a tutorial that sets us up for success with that experimentation.
This tutorial should be called “How to create a senseless logo Photoshop Tutorial”. Tool tutorials should notmess around with graphic design topics. I’m not saying this tutorial is wrong or anything, i’m just stating that logo creation is far more than learning to do some stuff in ps or whatever tool you chose for your next project.
I think you guys are kinda rude. I’m sure the tutorial will be helpful for someone. No one cares for fake internet design snobs.
BTW, before you talk trash about someone who’s actually trying to help you should
1) take the time out your using to be a bitch and teach people something better or at all.
2) get your own design work together cause some of you talking trash have REALLY crappy sites and could use this tutorial… hell ANYTHING to help you.
thanks a lot
Thanks, nice tutorial!
sorry. No one designs logos in photoshop. Teaching people this way will only cause problems if they ever had to actually use it for anything. Logos are always vector unless there is a very compelling reason for them not to be.
looking nice. i will try. thx
very nice
