It seems like it was just yesterday when Myspace was the rave. Users could customize their own backgrounds, add music and videos and write on each others’ pages. Yet with the rapid growth of Facebook and now Twitter, it seems that Myspace has just been left in the dust. This begs the question, is Myspace still relevant? Should you even consider deleting your Myspace account?

Like all social networking sites and especially new startups, Myspace has come up against some bumps in the road, including how to deal with spammers, inappropriate content, privacy and most importantly for their creators, how to make money. Two of the biggest turnoffs recently for Myspace users has been advertisement and spammers.v(...)

Better Design, a Better Conference

Princeton University’s Student Design Agency is hosting its second annual graphic design conference, Better: Design for Social Causes, taking place on Saturday, February 28th, 2009 from 10AM to 6PM.

The conference brings together student designers from all over the nation to learn about how graphic design can serve as a vehicle for social change. Design luminaries Abbott Miller, Jessica Helfand, William Drenttel, Brian Collins, and Jeffrey Zeldman are currently among the confirmed speakers. The program also includes a poster design competition, featuring a grand prize of $100 and a personal portfolio review by the speakers.

I heard a good story this week about an astronaut who wanted to make a point with NASA bosses. So he created a YouTube video (it’s fun—take a look) because he didn’t want to do a “boring PowerPoint.” Which is yet another reminder that most of the many PPT presentations getting made every day are not interesting, not creative, and not very effective.

Apple’s iMovie is part of the iLife suite of software products that comes free with every Mac. The iLife apps are designed to enhance users digital lives by making playing and working with digital media easy for all users. As it’s name suggests, iMovie is about about video editing.

iMovie can import video from a wide variety of sources. You can bring video in from your digital camera over a USB or Firewire cable, import it through your Mac’s built in camera or even pull it in from a DVD that’s been converted into a .mov file. We all understand how important it is to know just how site visitors navigate a site, what they click on, where they come from, where they go when they leave the site and similar indicators of behavior. These are the factors on which great Web designs are built.

I’ve pulled together a list of sites I think will help you understand how a Web site looks and works to optimize design and copy. You can also think of these sites as services you can sell to your clients: In your initial pitch provide them with the option of your monitoring their Web site activity. That keeps you in touch with your clients after the initial work is done and you use the site-monitoring results to sell additional design services or updates.

Why Web Designers and Web Writers Should Talk

I often write about Web design, although I’m not a designer. Oh sure, I can muck around with Macromedia’s Dreamweaver, HTML, Adobe Photoshop and other tools of the trade, but I didn’t get a degree in graphics design. Mine was in mass communication.

Most of what I know about Web design comes from working with some very good designers over the years and a goodly amount of my studying on the side. I’ve learned to speak the designer’s lingo and I so respect the work they do to the extent than I’d starve if God hadn’t made good Web designers. I’d like to believe I understand their objectives as much as they understand mine.

When I work with a designer, my thoughts often go beyond what many writers think about into the realm of things that most designers think about. I start to worry when a Web design gets in the way of how site visitors will be able to find information logically and intuitively, how the site navigation is structured, how site visitors travel through the site, how fast the page loads, whether the site is optimized for search engine optimization and several other factors that designers should also be thinking about. The one thing I dislike is design for the sake of design. If you use Flash animation, there should be a reason for it other than the fact that you think a dancing monkey is cool.
