Even the best of us creative types struggle with what I like to call “designer’s block,” staring at a blank canvas in your favorite graphics editing program for hours. It can be downright difficult to find inspiration when starting a design from scratch. I have often found that one great source of inspiration are Photoshop brush sets.

Depending on the type of website, I might choose to create my design based on a set of grunge brushes. Or for a more artistic website, I could choose a set of nature brushes. I wrote about using Flickr a while ago as a good source of images that you can use free and with few or no copyright limitations.

Lately, I’ve been organizing my database of places to find free and unrestricted images. Keep in mind that “free” often requires your giving the source credit and a link back to the image provider’s site.

No, this list does not include every site in the universe. If you have some favorites, please add them as a comment and I’ll add them to the next list. Thanks.

Here’s what I’ve come up with recently:

Springfield Township High School Virtual Library–It seems odd, I know, but you can find a long list of sites where you can find free images and videos. Many of them have a historical aspect. I’ll probably wind up mentioning some of the same ones on this list, so apologies in advance for any overlap.

In this day and age, it’s not just graphic designers and programmers who really benefit from having a simple online resume, it is anyone on a serious job-hunt. (Although, if you are a designer or programmer, you should really have one.)

Here’s why:

1. It shows you go the extra mile

Potential Employers are definitely looking at all angles of you when you apply for a job. Having a personal website, however simple, is a sign that you take some pride in yourself and that you take things the extra mile. Anyone can type up a resume or fill out a form, but less have the skill and confidence to say “want to know more? You can check out my personal website.”
