Can anyone recommend decent (free/open source/cheap) software to do this? I am a PHP developer but I'm afraid I don't want to spend all my "personal project time" re-inventing the wheel if someone with more business & financial experience than me has done so already.

It's worth noting I am based in the UK. Often the software I've see is very US centric which is understandable as that's where a lot of it is made but frustrating nonetheless.

When it comes to receipts, I put them in a #10 envelope throughout the month, enter them in the "expenses" tab, and seal the envelopes at the end of the month. I keep them in a file folder through the year. At the end of the year, I put them in a manilla envelope to send to an accountant/tax preparer.

This was very helpful.. thanks! I keep looking into different ways to handle my accounting system. Currently it's literally a box full of receipts and that just isn't going to cut it much longer lol.

I have used a couple of tools consistently for years. Quicken to keep my actual books. It's great because it downloads directly from your bank account, and it's easy to set up categories. A custom Filemaker database. It doesn't take much to create a custom database for your business with Filemaker. I use it to a) keep track of clients, b) keep track of marketing, and c) to invoice clients.

Also, I posted a similar article a few weeks ago about organizing your freelance business that some of you might be interested in:
