When I started out in web design there was no articles detailing the correct and proper process for designing a web site from start to finish. I muddled my way through hoping I was doing things correctly and getting some advice from other web designers along the way.
Nowadays there are loads of great resources you can use to refine your process, here we dug out some of the most useful for you ….
Redesigning the Expression Engine Site – One of my current favorite corporate websites, an exemplary example of good clean and functional design; Jesse Bennett-Chamberlain of 31three talks you through every stage of the development process from his working environment, wire-framing the site to the finished product. An excellent read.
The Website Development Process – A pingmag article illustrated with lego men, what more do you want ?!
Here’s my breakdown of the ideal web design process – A web designer with 10 years experience walks you through his process
A Design Process Revealed – Douglas Bowman walks you through a CSS Zengarden entry
An Introduction to Using Patterns in Web Design – The 37 signals team details patterns when creating web designs
Web Style Guide – THE FIRST STEP in designing any Web site is to define your goals. Without a clearly stated mission and objectives the project will drift, bog down, or continue past an appropriate endpoint. Careful planning and a clear purpose are the keys to success in building Web sites
Making New Fake News – The designer’s take on the redesign of theonion.com
ABC News Redesign – Mike Davidson on redesigning ABC News
How to nail a sexy layout – The steps in creating an xhtml layout from scratch
The Layers of Design: the style layer – Style for its own sake or by itself is not design, certainly, but stylistic concerns are important to successful design
The One 2 One story – This article represents a body of development for the redesign of One 2 One’s web presence in 2001. The redesign revolved around multiple access from multiple platforms as well as integration of new mobile services
A Design Method – When working in an environment that requires lots of creative production in a short time schedule (ie., when working on the web), it can be helpful to have a design method. A method is simply a set of steps that you can refer to, without having to constantly recreate the path from start to finished product.
